Stalled supply chains cause new registrations to fall in September

A lack of components and faltering supply chains continue to hamper the production of leisure vehicles. As a result, new registrations in September fell by 9.1 percent compared to the same month last year, despite continued very high demand. 6,806 new vehicle registrations are nevertheless the second-best result for the month of September in history and almost double the number of units registered in September 2019.

A total of 27,406 leisure vehicles were newly registered in Germany in the third quarter. This is 19.0 per cent less than in the third quarter of 2020 – the best quarter in the industry’s history. In absolute terms and compared to the third quarter two years ago, the last three months have been exceptionally successful.

Since the beginning of the year, new registrations of motor caravans and caravans have grown by 2.2 percent. With 90,245 newly registered vehicles, the caravanning industry experienced the most successful first nine months in its history this year.

New caravan registrations down at a high level

Compared to the extraordinarily successful September of last year, new caravan registrations fell by 6.5 percent. However, 1,838 units registered for the first time is a significantly better September result than in 2019 and previous years. Third quarter performance was down 22.8 per cent compared to the same period last year due to supply difficulties. However, 7,594 new caravans registered is the second-best result for the third quarter in recent decades. In the first three quarters of the year, 21,705 caravans were put on the market for the first time – 11.9 per cent fewer than in the same period of the exceptional year 2020. Caravan registrations are, therefore, at about the same level as in 2018 at this point in the year.

Second-best third quarter for motor caravans in industry history

Delayed deliveries are also making themselves felt in motor caravans. New registrations fell by 10.1 per cent in September compared to the record September from the previous year. However, the absolute figure of 4,968 vehicles registered for the first time means more than a doubling compared to September 2019. The new registrations in the third quarter also illustrate the continued strong demand for motor caravans: 19,812 vehicles are 17.5 per cent less than in the record quarter a year ago, but a huge increase compared to the third quarter of 2019. In the first nine months, new motor caravan registrations even increased by 7.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. In total, 68,540 units have been put on the market for the first time since January.
