Chinese Delegation Visited Dutch Campgrounds to Learn the Local Recreation Development

From August 29 to September 6, 2013, Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. organised a Chinese Delegation to visit European campgrounds and learn the advanced developing experience of caravaning industry. Next to a tour to the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, one day was reserved to visit camping sites in the Netherlands. The rich camping history in the Netherlands and the very well developed character of the camping sites there were the main reasons for the Chinese delegation to visit the country. The delegation was guided by Brons + Partners Landscape Architects, who carefully selected two different types of camping sites to introduce: the city campsite “Het Amsterdamse Bos” and the holiday campsite/resort “Camping Tempelhof ”. And they also booked several cottages for the delegation, for whom could enjoy one night sleep on a Dutch camping site.

Camping site Amsterdamse Bos
"The Amsterdamse Bos, 935 ha, is situated on the southern ring of the magnificent Amsterdam forest (“Bos”). A beautiful area: in the middle of nature with high trees, grass and water canals, yet very close to the city centre of Amsterdam. Amongst other activities, in the Amsterdam forest you can go for a walk, ride a bike, visit the open air theatre, have a swim or rent a canoe. The Amsterdam Forest has 4,5 million visitors each year.

The area includes 137 km footpaths, 51 km cyclepath, 16 km horsetracks and 14 km road for maintenance plus 100 bridges. The centre of Amsterdam can be easily reached from the campsite.

"Amsterdamse Bos" is a basic city camping site which offers accommodation for everybody. The campsite is mostly used by people from abroad who want to visit the capital city of The Netherlands. The accommodations range from very basic to very luxurious ones with bathroom, kitchen, television and central heating. Next to good sanitary services the campsite has a shop, a launderette and a self cooking kitchen with dining-room which can be used freely. And last but not least they offer free wifi on the entire campsite.

The director of Brons + Partners Mr. Rudy Brons gave a detailed explanation of how they organized the camping site, types of accommodation, way of design, the materials, the function of green structure, water and electricity etc.

The green environment is very important for camping sites: it gives people a comfortable, quiet place to stay overnight. This is also a reason why people like to stay in camping site instead of a hotel, because people can fully enjoy to stay in the nature.

After visiting the whole camping site, Mr. Brons invited the camping site owner, who explained how to manage the camping site, the safety issues and maintenance. Then the delegation took a bike trip to explore the connected nature area, studying how recreation, routes and catering are organized.

Camping Tempelhof

In the afternoon, the delegation went to visit "Camping Tempelhof", which is located in Callantsoog in the province of North Holland, located north of Amsterdam. It is a 5-star camping site nearby the North Sea coast, and thus offers visitors to explore the coastal nature and beaches of The Netherlands.

The camping site itself offers all kinds of facilities like indoor/outdoor sport centre and equipment, a swimming pool, children’s playground and a small theatre, in which you can fully enjoy the camping site with your friends or family. Even when the weather is bad, the camping site will offer its visitors a comfortable stay and holiday feeling. While camping site “Amsterdamse Bos” is mostly used for short time stays, and very small part is for seasonal rental; camping “Tempelhof” also offers seasonal and yearly rental of accommodation, you could rent a square and put on your own caravan or mobile house, design your own little garden. It offers a good place to stay out of the city during the summertime.

Camping Tempelhof has also taken measures to become more sustainable and eco-friendly. The camping site manager explained about how water is recycled on the camping site, keeping it eco-friendly and using less energy.

With more than 100 years of camping experience and camping culture, nowadays the number of camping sites in The Netherlands is more than 2.200. Research from 2010 shows some facts about camping in The Netherlands. The country has 16.165.000 inhabitants; the number of annual guests on campsites in total is 3.483.000.
