Innovations, Trends and Developments in the UK Camping Market

In recently years, a lot of innovations have appeared in the UK camping market. For example, on the accommodation side, innovations have included transparent inflatable tents, a new version of ‘log pods’ and; in caravans, remote control over heating systems via mobile phone text messages. Both the Royal Wedding and Olympic Games have spurred the creation of temporary campsites for potential visitors. And campers with electrical devices can look to the BioLite CampStove, which uses wood for fuel and converts some of the thermal energy produced to charge phones etc.

Caravanning is a perfect reflection of the British psyche: you can go at your own pace, stop where you want to, and do things in your way. In the following years, more and more people will choose auto camping as the best way of family togetherness, through which the Caravan Club believes that families are re-discovering outdoor adventure together. Research shows that this ‘togetherness’ even extends to the fact that 55% of children are more likely to do the washing up when staying in a caravan. More 45+ age groups will try camping and caravanning due to three factors: children have left home, nostalgia, and promotion of the ‘staycation’. Another buoyant market segment linked to older travellers is (static) caravan holiday homes that are rented or owned. Green initiatives, biodiversity, carbon footprint, sustainable tourism are all themes of the moment and camping and caravanning is both seen, and promoted, as a low-impact activity. Members of the Caravan Club are more likely to have embraced an environmentally friendly lifestyle than the public at large.
